Signs You May Have Cataracts
Cataracts develop slowly. The signs are easy to miss.
Most patients do not realize how much their vision has changed until they compare it to clearer days. If any of the following sound familiar, it may be time for a comprehensive evaluation.
- Blurry, hazy, or filmy vision that does not clear with new glasses
- Increased glare or halos around lights, especially driving at night
- Colors that look faded or yellowed
- Frequent prescription changes that do not seem to help
- Difficulty reading menus, screens, or printed material
- Family members noticing you squint, struggle in low light, or avoid driving after dark
Cataracts are normal. Most adults develop them with age, and modern surgery is one of the most refined procedures in medicine. The earlier they are identified, the more time you have to plan the right approach.

Premium Lens Options
Cataract surgery has changed.
Modern cataract surgery is no longer just about removing the cloudy lens. Today’s intraocular lenses can also correct astigmatism, improve reading vision, and reduce the need for glasses across multiple distances.
Monofocal IOLs
The standard option, covered by Medicare and most insurance. Provides clear vision at one focal distance, typically requiring reading glasses for closer work.
Toric IOLs
Designed to correct astigmatism at the same time as cataract removal. Many patients with significant astigmatism become candidates for sharper distance vision than they have had in years.
Multifocal & EDOF IOLs
Premium lenses designed to provide vision across multiple distances, including distance, intermediate, and reading, potentially reducing dependence on glasses for many daily activities.
Laser-Assisted Cataract Surgery
Advanced precision.
Trusted experience.
Dr. Kerry Solomon’s practice operates multiple laser cataract platforms, among the most advanced technology available for cataract surgery today. Laser-assisted procedures bring measurable precision to several critical steps of the operation.
Technology alone is not what determines outcomes. The surgeon does. Dr. Kerry Solomon has been named one of the Top 50 Opinion Leaders in the Fields of Cataract and Refractive Surgery every year since 2002, and one of the Top 250 Innovators in Premium IOL Surgery by Premier Surgeon.
For Charleston cataract patients, that combination of modern technology in experienced hands is what defines a practice you can trust with your vision.

For Charleston patients and the families who refer them, the message is consistent: when it is time for cataract surgery, you want a surgeon who has done this thousands of times, not hundreds.

Common Questions
Cataract surgery, answered.
What are cataracts and why do they develop?
A cataract is a clouding of the eye’s natural lens. They develop gradually with age, and most adults will develop them eventually. Common symptoms include blurry vision, glare while driving, faded colors, and difficulty reading. Modern cataract surgery removes the cloudy lens and replaces it with a clear intraocular lens.
Can cataract surgery reduce my dependence on glasses?
For many patients, yes. Premium IOLs, including multifocal, toric, and EDOF lenses, may help reduce dependence on glasses for distance, intermediate, and reading vision. Lens selection depends on your eyes, your visual goals, and your lifestyle.
What is laser-assisted cataract surgery?
Laser-assisted cataract surgery uses femtosecond laser technology to perform several precise steps of the procedure, including the initial corneal incision and breaking up of the cataract. Dr. Kerry Solomon’s practice operates multiple laser cataract platforms.
How long does cataract surgery take?
The cataract surgery procedure itself typically takes about 15–20 minutes per eye. Patients are generally in and out of the surgical center within a couple of hours. Most patients have one eye done at a time, with a week or two between the two procedures.
Is cataract surgery covered by insurance?
Basic cataract surgery with a standard monofocal IOL is typically covered by Medicare and most insurance plans. Premium IOL upgrades and laser-assisted technology usually involve an out-of-pocket cost. Our office will review the specifics with you during your consultation.
What is recovery like?
Most patients notice improved vision within a few days. Recovery varies. Some patients return to light activity the same day, while others take a few days. You will use prescribed drops for several weeks. Follow-up visits monitor your healing and visual outcome.
When is the right time to have cataract surgery?
The right time is when cataracts begin meaningfully affecting your daily life, such as driving, reading, working, or activities you enjoy. Cataracts do not need to be ripe to remove. A comprehensive evaluation determines whether surgery is recommended.
