What Is EVO ICL?
An advanced LASIK alternative.
EVO ICL stands for Implantable Collamer Lens, a soft, biocompatible lens that is placed inside the eye behind the iris to correct nearsightedness. Unlike LASIK, EVO ICL does not reshape the cornea. The natural eye structure stays intact.
Many patients who have been told they are not LASIK candidates discover EVO ICL is an excellent fit. The lens is invisible once implanted, the procedure takes about 20 to 30 minutes, and patients often experience excellent visual quality.
Most importantly: EVO ICL is reversible. Unlike LASIK, which permanently reshapes the cornea, the implantable lens can be removed if a patient’s vision needs change in the future.

Candidacy
Who is EVO ICL for?
Comprehensive evaluation determines candidacy, but patients in these categories are often strong candidates for EVO ICL, including many who were turned away from LASIK.
Thin or Irregular Corneas
EVO ICL preserves the natural cornea entirely. Patients whose corneas are too thin for safe LASIK reshaping may still be excellent EVO ICL candidates.
Higher Prescriptions
EVO ICL is designed to correct a broad range of nearsightedness, including prescriptions that may exceed the safe range for laser vision correction.
Dry Eye Concerns
Because EVO ICL does not involve corneal reshaping, patients with dry eye symptoms often tolerate it well. Comprehensive evaluation will determine whether your specific case is suitable.
LASIK vs EVO ICL
How they differ.
Both procedures are excellent options for the right patient. The differences come down to how your eyes work today and what you want your vision to look like in five, ten, or twenty years.
LASIK
What it does: Reshapes the cornea with laser energy.
Reversible: No, permanent.
Best for: Healthy, sufficiently thick corneas with stable mild-to-moderate prescriptions.
EVO ICL
What it does: Implants a soft lens inside the eye.
Reversible: Yes, the lens can be removed.
Best for: Thin corneas, higher prescriptions, dry eye concerns, or patients seeking a non-laser option.

Why Dr. Kerry Solomon
The surgeon who knows when LASIK is not the answer.
Not every LASIK clinic offers EVO ICL. Many practices recommend LASIK because it is all they perform, and turn away patients who do not qualify. Dr. Kerry Solomon’s practice is different: 80,000 procedures across the full range of vision correction options means he can recommend the right answer, not just the available one.
He has been named one of the Best Doctors in America every year since 2002, and one of the Top 50 Opinion Leaders in Cataract and Refractive Surgery for over two decades. His work has been cited in The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, and on NBC’s Today show.
For Charleston patients exploring EVO ICL, that experience matters: this is a surgeon who has seen the full spectrum of vision correction and can tell you honestly which option is the best fit.

Common Questions
EVO ICL, answered.
What exactly is EVO ICL?
EVO ICL stands for Implantable Collamer Lens. It is a soft, biocompatible lens that is placed inside the eye behind the iris to correct nearsightedness. Unlike LASIK, EVO ICL does not reshape the cornea. The natural eye structure stays intact, and the lens can be removed if necessary.
How do I know if I am a candidate?
The only way to know for sure is a comprehensive evaluation. That said, EVO ICL is often a strong fit for patients with thin or irregularly shaped corneas, higher prescriptions, dry eye concerns, or those who have been told they are not LASIK candidates. Many patients who came in expecting bad news leave with a better option.
How long does the procedure take?
The EVO ICL procedure itself typically takes about 20 to 30 minutes for both eyes. From the time you arrive at the surgical suite to the time you leave, plan on a couple of hours. You will need someone to drive you home.
Will I be able to see or feel the lens?
No. Once implanted, EVO ICL is not visible to others and is not noticeable to you. The lens sits behind the iris where it cannot be seen or felt. Only an eye doctor with specialized equipment can detect its presence.
Is EVO ICL reversible?
Yes. Unlike LASIK, which permanently reshapes the cornea, EVO ICL preserves the natural cornea entirely. The implantable lens can be removed if your vision needs change in the future. Most patients never need this, but the option exists.
What is recovery like?
Many patients notice visual improvement shortly after the procedure. Most return to normal daily activities within one to two days. Some experience mild light sensitivity or fluctuating vision in the first week, which typically resolves as the eyes settle. Follow-up visits are part of the process.
