Why LASIK
The most-performed vision correction procedure in the world.
LASIK uses advanced laser technology to reshape the cornea, improving how light focuses on the retina and reducing your dependence on glasses and contacts. For the right candidate, it is one of the most life-changing procedures in modern medicine.
Most patients choose LASIK because they are tired of the daily friction of corrective lenses:
- Contacts that dry out by mid-afternoon
- Glasses that slip during workouts, slide off the nose in summer heat
- The travel inconvenience of solutions, cases, and backups
- Compromises during sports, swimming, and outdoor activities
- The quiet expense, year after year, of lenses and frames

Candidacy
Am I a candidate for LASIK?
LASIK candidacy depends on a comprehensive evaluation of your eyes, not on a quick answer online. But the strongest candidates typically share several characteristics.
Age & Stability
Generally 18 or older, with a stable prescription for at least 12 months. Most LASIK patients are between 24 and 45, the years when active lifestyles make corrective lenses most frustrating.
Healthy Corneas
Sufficient corneal thickness and shape to safely accommodate laser reshaping. If your corneas are thin or irregularly shaped, alternatives like EVO ICL or PRK may be a better fit.
Overall Eye Health
No active eye conditions, well-managed dry eye, and a prescription range that LASIK is designed to address. Comprehensive testing during your consultation determines all of the above.
If LASIK Is Not Right
LASIK is not your only option.
If your comprehensive exam shows that LASIK may not be the best fit, that does not mean you are out of options. Dr. Kerry Solomon offers several advanced alternatives, and will recommend the one that fits your eyes.
EVO ICL
An implantable lens designed for patients with thin corneas or higher prescriptions. Many patients told they are not LASIK candidates are excellent candidates for EVO ICL.
PRK
The original laser vision correction procedure. PRK may be a strong option for patients with thinner or irregularly shaped corneas.
Refractive Lens Exchange
For patients over 40 who want to reduce dependence on readers and glasses, RLE replaces the eye’s natural lens with an advanced artificial lens.
Why Dr. Kerry Solomon
Experience matters more than technology.
Every LASIK clinic has lasers. What separates Dr. Kerry Solomon is what he has done with them: over 80,000 procedures, three decades of refinement, and a list of firsts, including being the first surgeon in the United States to offer topo-guided LASIK.
He has been named one of the Best Doctors in America every year since 2002, and one of the Top 50 Opinion Leaders in Cataract and Refractive Surgery for over two decades. His work has been cited in The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, and on NBC’s Today show.
For Charleston LASIK patients, that means one thing: the surgeon doing your procedure has done this more times, and more carefully, than nearly anyone in the region.

Common Questions
LASIK, answered.
How do I know if I am a candidate for LASIK?
LASIK candidacy depends on age, prescription stability, corneal thickness, dry eye status, and overall eye health. A comprehensive consultation with Dr. Kerry Solomon is the only way to know for sure. You can also take the free online self-test as a first step, but the consultation is what determines candidacy.
How long does the LASIK procedure take?
The LASIK procedure itself typically takes about 10 to 15 minutes for both eyes. From the time you arrive at the surgical suite to the time you leave, plan on a couple of hours. You will need someone to drive you home.
What is recovery like?
Many patients notice visual improvement within the first 24 hours. Most return to work within one to two days. Some experience mild dryness, light sensitivity, or fluctuating vision in the first week, all of which typically resolve as the eyes heal. Recovery experiences vary, and follow-up visits are part of the process.
Does LASIK hurt?
Anesthetic drops numb the eye during the procedure. Most patients report minimal discomfort, a sensation of pressure rather than pain. Mild dryness or scratchiness during the first day or two of recovery is common and typically managed with prescribed drops.
How much does LASIK cost?
LASIK pricing varies based on the technology used and the complexity of your prescription. The office offers transparent pricing during your consultation, along with financing options that make the procedure accessible. View financing options.
What if I am not a LASIK candidate?
Many patients told they are not candidates for LASIK turn out to be excellent candidates for EVO ICL, PRK, or refractive lens exchange. LASIK is one option among several, not the only path to clearer vision. Dr. Kerry Solomon will recommend the procedure best suited to your eyes.
